PBS anchor Jim Lehrer hosted “By the People: Citizenship in the 21st
Century” a one-hour program based on a series of local deliberations
in select U.S. communities and from the November 2007 Williamsburg convocation
entitled "Dialogues in Democracy: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of
Happiness.” The PBS documentary aired January 4, 2008.
"Dialogues
in Democracy,” held in Colonial Williamsburg's Historic Area and in
partnership with MacNeil/Lehrer Productions’ By the People, was a national
conversation with emerging leaders and influential Americans about fundamental
citizenship. Delegates explored 21st-century citizens' rights, responsibilities,
and expectations. The final day of the four-day program was held in Colonial
Williamsburg’s House of Burgesses in the Capitol. Delegates created
a draft of a "Declaration of Citizenship for the 21st Century," intended
to extend the conversation to the public.
