Prissy, Dennis, and Tom's Day
We meet Dennis a young slave of the Carter family, Prissy, the Carter's
youngest daughter, and Tom an apprentice carpenter. This episode explores
the differences in work, education, lifestyle, and family life of the
different classes these children represent.
Mr. Carter's Day
In this episode we meet Mr. Carter a member of the gentry and a counselor
to the Royal Governor. He seeks his own counsel with Mr. Grove, a wise
plantation owner as to whether he should support efforts to protest
the British actions in Boston. This episode examines the political responsibilities,
as well as the home life of the gentry.
Daniel Grove's Day
Daniel Grove is a young gentry man who will escort Mr. Carter's oldest
daughter Elizabeth to a ball this evening. This episode looks into Daniel's
lessons ranging from Shakespeare to fencing, and takes us along on a
horse race and to a subscription ball.
Jill's Day
Jill is a slave at the Grove plantation. She is pregnant, and nearly
run down by Daniel and his friend while they are racing their horses.
This episode shows the hardships of plantation slaves' lives, how enslaved
families can be separated by their masters, and the difficulty of escape.
Anne
Sparks's Day
As Elizabeth Carter is shopping at the millinery for accessories to
wear to the ball, Anne Sparks a free black woman who makes her living
as a seamstress arrives. This episode explores family life in a free
black household, and teaches how even free African Americans struggled
in eighteenth-century Virginia.
Patsy
Grenville's Day
Anne Sparks sews for the Grenville store too. Patsy Grenville is the
young daughter of the proprietor. Patsy has a head for business but
is unlikely to earn the chance to own her own store. This episode takes
a close look at how people purchased their goods in eighteenth-century
Virginia, and examines the colonial monetary system.
James
Campbell's Day
Tom's friend, James, is apprenticed to a master blacksmith. James has
ambitions to become an artisan, but first he must learn the lessons
of hammer and forge. This episode looks closely at the apprentice system
in colonial times.
Mrs.
Woods Day
Tom is apprenticed to Mr. Wood, and lives with the Wood family. This
episode explores the role of a middle class woman in the eighteenth
century, as we follow Mrs. Wood through her day of supervising the household,
running errands, and celebrating an anniversary.
