Horseracing

Horseracing is extremely popular in Virginia, but it is for young men. A gentlelady might dress in her finest riding habit and ride sidesaddle for pleasure. She might ride out to the horserace and watch the races, but a young genteel lady would certainly not ride in a horserace.
