Landon Carter (1710-1778) was the fourth son of Robert "King" Carter, the wealthiest American of his generation. Landon received an excellent education and ample inheritance. In addition to managing his large estate, Carter served as a justice of the peace for Richmond County. He was a member of the vestry for Lunenburgh Parish. He commanded the militia for Richmond County, and he represented the county in the House of Burgesses. As a member of the House of Burgesses, Carter protested against British measures to limit American rights.
