Landon
Carter (1710-1778) was the fourth son of Robert "King" Carter, the
wealthiest American of his generation. Landon received an excellent
education and ample inheritance. In addition to managing his large
estate, Carter served as a justice of the peace for Richmond County.
He was a member of the vestry for Lunenburgh Parish. He commanded
the militia for Richmond County, and he represented the county in
the House of Burgesses. As a member of the House of Burgesses, Carter
protested against British measures to limit American rights. |
