You will want to dress comfortably throughout the week; the pace of the Institute involves 10- to 12-hour days, with two- and three-mile walks throughout the day being common. The summer weather in Virginia is usually 90+ degrees with high humidity and occasional afternoon thundershowers. The extremely hot and humid weather of a Virginia summer can take its toll on those who are unprepared. Cool and comfortable clothing is a must. Shorts and walking/athletic footwear are highly recommended. Laundry facilities are currently not available on site; please pack appropriately. |

- Umbrella/rain gear
- Refillable water bottle
- Medications

- Writing instrument (pen or pencil)

- Copy of your state’s social studies standards for your grade level
Past participants also suggest that teachers bring an empty suitcase
to carry educational materials home.
What if I forget something?Items such as bottled water, toothpaste, shampoo, juice,
film, etc., may be purchased at the hotel gift shops or vending
machines.
