Walking down the roadThe main road is the shortest route to Carter's Grove, but it's also the most public. You hurry along, wishing you had eyes in the back of your head.

But danger lies ahead. You jog around the bend... and into the hands of the constable. He demands your travel pass, but of course you don't have one. Your master doesn't even know you have left his house. So the constable hauls you off to jail. Behind bars

There you wait, in the damp darkness, until your master comes for you. "You'll never travel beyond my fence again," he tells you as he drags you back home. True to his word, he shackles you with leg irons and increases your workload. He keeps a close eye on you all the time. It seems like you are never out of his sight.

As you labor, you think longingly of your wife and children. It will be a very long time before you'll have any chance to see them again.
