A York County farmer, his wife and five children load their cart with milk, eggs, butter, potatoes, onions and garden vegetables to take to Williamsburg for market day. They must leave before daylight. The trip takes two hours—more if the weather is bad, fallen trees block the roads, or a wheel breaks. An illness in the family may postpone the trip.
If they get there early, they can expect good profits. The money will buy such necessities as tools, salt, medicines, needles, and cloth. And if their mother’s butter is as fresh and delicate as usual, her regular customers will pay enough to allow for a small treat.
Father has taken his rifle to the gunsmith for repairs. When he returns, he’ll weigh the cost against the day’s earnings. If there is enough, might he buy a newspaper to read aloud to his illiterate family? Or will they enjoy sugar and tea for a change? What news will the farmer and his wife pick up in town? Will the children enjoy market day, or is it hard work as usual?
