Avoiding the Dreaded Smallpox

Smallpox! The dreaded disease has returned to Virginia. During the last epidemic, 26 years..
ago, nearly 25% of those who caught the disease soon died from it.

You caught the disease during that epidemic but survived—and like all survivors, you are now immune to smallpox. But your brother died of the disease, and your beautiful sister was so disfigured by the scarring left by the pockmarks that she never married.

AnnieNow, as an adult, you have already lost one child, Annie, to scarlet fever, a common childhood disease. The smallpox epidemic threatens your remaining five children and your slaves (below), as well as everything else your family—an upper-middling-class trade family with a thriving silversmith business—has achieved.

Can you protect your family—including several slaves who seem like part of the family—from this dreaded disease?
As you prepare for the epidemic, you may want to seek the advice of those near to you. Who would you like to talk with first?
