Designed for elementary, middle, and high school social studies teachers who teach United States history and government, these intensive six-day Institutes immerse participants in American history.
Elementary school sessions focus on the colonial and the early nation period “on location” in Williamsburg, the restored capital city of 18th-century Virginia, and nearby Jamestown and Yorktown. Middle school sessions visit historic sites in Williamsburg, Jamestown, Yorktown, and Richmond, to explore content from 1607 to the Civil War. High school sessions use a thematic approach to American history in which teachers explore how issues in American history have been under constant debate. By visiting historic sites in Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Richmond, teachers debate issues from unity vs. diversity, private wealth vs. commonwealth, law vs. ethics, and freedom vs. equality, that symbolize the major ideas Americans have dealt with as active citizens for more than 300 years.
During these sessions, 25 participants and a mentor teacher engage in an interdisciplinary approach to teaching social studies with American history as the focus. Teachers have the opportunity to exchange ideas with noted historians, meet character interpreters, and take part in reenactments of 18th-century events. They review various interactive teaching techniques with a mentor teacher and with each other. Instructional materials in a variety of media are provided to participants to use in their classrooms. Together with Colonial Williamsburg staff, teachers prepare new instructional materials for use in their own classrooms.
Tuition: $2,200. Includes a double-occupancy room in the Colonial Houses and Taverns, three meals a day, local transportation during the Institute, tours, evening programs, admissions to program-specific local historic sites, and educational materials. [Note: Teachers who would like a single room may pay a single room rate.]
Educational materials: lesson plans, primary sources, facsimile objects and documents, books, and digital media—have been selected to complement the experience in Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown and will help teachers recreate their Institute experiences in the classroom.
