About this entry:
The Gazette reported the wedding a day after it took place at the Forest, just west of Williamsburg in Charles City County, the home of John Wayles. Jefferson wrote in his memoir: “On the first of January 1772 I was married to Martha Skelton widow of Bathurst Skelton, and daughter of John Wayles, then 23 years old”.
