INDEPENDENCE of the UNITED COLONIES was proclaimed here, and received with universal applause, under the discharge of cannon, firing of small arms, illuminations in the evening, etc. etc.

Fifty-six years later Joseph Bridges, a soldier in the 2nd Virginia Regiment, remembered hearing the Declaration of Independence in Williamsburg - In July 1776 the regiment marched to Williamsburg where the Declaration of Independence was read to the troops by Benjamin Waller, Clerk of the General Court.
