Golden Horseshoe supports third annual Patriot Golf event Labor Day weekend

Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club will participate in the third annual Patriot Golf Day Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4 through 7. Golfers who play any time during the weekend may voluntarily contribute a minimum of $1 to the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides scholarships to the spouses or children of those who have lost their lives or become disabled serving in Iraq or Afghanistan.

Patriot Golf Day is supported by the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association. In its first year, more than $1.1 million was raised, and in 2008, the amount grew to nearly $2 million through the participation of more than 3,800 golf facilities.

The initiative was originated by Maj. Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, who is also a PGA professional, member of the U.S.G.A. and a golf course owner. Maj. Rooney was aboard a commercial aircraft traveling from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Mich., when the pilot asked passengers to remain seated as a sign of respect while the flag-draped coffin of a fallen solder was removed from the aircraft and met by the soldier’s family. Maj. Rooney observed the family meeting their son, brother, husband and father and realized he knew nothing of the devastation families endure when a soldier is killed or disabled in action. Rooney vowed to do something to help those families and began with what he knew best – golf – to create Folds of Honor, a foundation which provides scholarships to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or injured while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. The first recipient was the little boy on the tarmac, son of the soldier who was returning home that rainy night in Michigan.

During Labor Day weekend, thousands of public golf courses participate in the foundation’s Patriot Golf Day and collect one extra dollar above the green fees. The money is used to benefit the deserving families of the fallen.

Maj. Rooney returned from his third tour of duty in Iraq in November of 2008.

Contributions to the Folds of Honor Foundation on Patriot Golf Day are in addition to the normal green fees and are entirely voluntary. For more information, call the Golden Horseshoe at 757-220-7696. The Golden Horseshoe Golf Club is located at 401 S. England St. in Williamsburg.
