CW signs lease for Gallery on Merchants Square

Colonial Williamsburg has signed a lease for a new art gallery to occupy the Merchants Square store space formerly used by Quilts Unlimited. Gallery On Merchants Square, owned by Jim and Janice Allmon, will feature paintings and sculpture by 25 national and regional artists, including landscape artist Janice Allmon, figurative oil painter Pino, marine artist Williams Storck, local contemporary artist Gloria Coker, waterfowl bronze sculptor David Turner and figurative bronze sculptor Karl Jensen. Both Coker and Turner are graduates of the College of William and Mary.

The Gallery on Merchants Square is scheduled to open March 1, with a formal open house and reception Saturday, March 8. Currently, the space is undergoing major interior renovation. Williams-Sonoma is the other tenant in the building, which is located on the corner of Boundary and Duke of Gloucester Streets.

“We are very excited about joining the premier and unique shopping and cultural entertainment experience that is Merchants Square,” said Jim Allmon. “Art is a form of celebration and we are pleased to be a part of bringing artists and collectors together.”

“We anticipate sharing a variety of art by some very talented and professional artists both with visitors and local residents through regular shows and receptions for featured artists,” said Janice Allmon, adding that she and her husband look forward to making Williamsburg their home and becoming a part of the community.

The Allmons opened their first gallery, Gallery On The Green, in Woodstock, Vt., in 1988. Gallery On The Green also specializes in national and regional artists and sculptors. The Vermont gallery has grown to become one of New England’s premier fine art venues, and it will continue to operate as a sister gallery to Gallery On Merchants Square.

“Gallery On Merchants Square will be a delightful addition to the stores in the downtown area,” said Colin G. Campbell, president and chairman of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “The Gallery is an engaging departure that should help further diversify the mix of opportunities and experiences for our area and out of town shoppers alike.”
