Special Performances, Fireworks and Picnic Highlight Run for the Dream and Drummers Call Weekend

Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area will be a buzz of activity from early morning until after dark the weekend of May 21–22. From the inaugural “Run for the Dream” benefiting An Achievable Dream and the Wounded Warriors program to the eighth annual Drummers Call Weekend, there’s plenty of activity for the entire family to enjoy.

Special hotel rates, a picnic dinner on the Palace Lawn, patriotic performances, a military tattoo and a short fireworks display add to the festive atmosphere of the weekend.

Friday, May 20

  • 8 p.m. – “Successful Campaign,” an evening of ceremonial military music at Colonial Williamsburg’s Kimball Theatre. Tickets are $12 for adults and youth ages six-17 and $6 for children under six.

    Saturday, May 21

  • 8 a.m. – Fit to Run, Fit to Dream 8K Run/Walk;
  • 8 a.m. – 2011 USA Masters 8K Championships;
  • 10 a.m. – Fun Run at Zable Stadium for ages 14 and under: 100 meter dash, 400 meter sprint and one-mile run;
  • 12 noon – “Grand March” from the Capitol to Market Square, fife and drum units from across the United States;
  • 12:45 p.m. “Grand Review” of fife and drum units on Market Square;
  • 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. Dine under the Stars on the lawn of the Governor’s Palace. The boxed picnic supper is $27.50 per person and includes tax and gratuity. Vegetarian meals available.   • 8 – 9 p.m. “A Salute to the Nation,” a program that spans 250 years of ideas that have created the unique spirit and identity that is America in all its variations. Concluding with a short fireworks display and a military tattoo of fifes and drums from around the nation in a parade from the Palace Green to the Capitol. No ticket required.

    Sunday, May 22

  • 7:30 a.m. – “Run for the Dream” Half Marathon;
  • 11 a.m. – “To Arms,” a demonstration of soldiers and their field music from various military units active during the American Revolution – Market Square.

    Special hotel rates from $99 are available at the Williamsburg Woodlands Hotel & Suites for race participants and $79 at the Governor’s Inn. Accommodations at both hotels includes complimentary continental breakfast, wireless Internet, access to a fitness center, walking trails, miniature golf and outdoor pools. Registered participants staying at any official Colonial Williamsburg hotel will receive free admission to Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Area and a reduced ticket price for friends and family members who accompany them.
