Golden Horseshoe Supports Fifth Annual Patriot Golf Event Labor Day Weekend and Extends Special $39 Rate to Military on Green Course
Colonial Williamsburg’s Golden Horseshoe Golf Club will participate in the fifth annual Patriot Golf Day Labor Day weekend, Sept. 2 through 5. Golfers who play any time during the weekend may voluntarily contribute a minimum of $1 to the Folds of Honor Foundation. Green fees on the Green Course for all active duty or retired military will be $39 any time Sept. 2–5, and up to three guests may play with the military member for that rate.
The initiative was originated by Maj. Dan Rooney, an F-16 pilot in the Oklahoma Air National Guard, who is also a PGA professional and member of the U.S.G.A. Maj. Rooney was aboard a commercial aircraft traveling from Chicago to Grand Rapids, Mich., when the pilot asked passengers to remain seated as a sign of respect while the flag-draped coffin of a fallen soldier was removed from the aircraft and met by the soldier’s family. Maj. Rooney observed the family meeting their son, brother, husband and father and realized he knew nothing of the devastation families endure when a soldier is killed or disabled in action.
Rooney vowed to do something to help those families and began with what he knew best – golf – to create Folds of Honor, a foundation which provides scholarships to the spouses and children of soldiers killed or injured while serving in the armed forces. The first recipient was the little boy on the tarmac, son of the soldier who was returning home that rainy night in Michigan.
On Labor Day 2007, Rooney asked golfers to add $1 to their green fees. His request resulted in donations of more than $1.1 million from more than 3,200 golf facilities. In the last four years, golfers nationwide have been instrumental in raising more than $5.3 million through Patriot Golf Day events resulting in 2,000+ recipients in all 50 states and 41 PGA sections.
During Labor Day weekend, thousands of golf courses participate in the foundation’s Patriot Golf Day and collect one extra dollar above the green fees. The money is used to benefit the deserving families of the fallen. Patriot Golf Day is supported by the PGA of America and the United States Golf Association.
Maj. Rooney returned from his third tour of duty in Iraq in November of 2008.
Contributions to the Folds of Honor Foundation on Patriot Golf Day are in addition to the normal green fees and are entirely voluntary.
