CW captures Gold Quill for 75th Anniversary

Colonial Williamsburg has captured the respected “Gold Quill Award” from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for activities related to the Foundation’s 75th Anniversary.

The Gold Quill has represented the hallmark of excellence in business communications for more than 25 years. The 2002 awards competition drew 1,347 entries worldwide, including from Australia, Canada, China, England, Japan, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. The award was given to Colonial Williamsburg for the overall media and public relations campaign promoting the Foundation’s 75th Anniversary.

Colonial Williamsburg also has captured the Silver Anvil Award of Excellence from the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The Silver Anvil Award of Excellence, symbolizing the forging of public opinion, is awarded annually to organizations that have, in the judgment of their public relations/communications peers, successfully addressed contemporary issues with exemplary professional skill, creativity and resourcefulness. Last year’s competition, which evaluated activities during 2001, drew 603 entries from around the country. Colonial Williamsburg captured the Silver Anvil Award of Excellence (there is no “Gold Anvil” award) for its 2001 July 4 History Survey, in which U.S. teenagers were asked a series of fourth-grade level history questions.

The foundation has done several nationwide surveys in recent years around the Fourth of July to highlight the importance of history education and of Colonial Williamsburg’s role in that endeavor. In 2002, the foundation conducted a July 4 survey that probed Americans’ views on freedom and democracy.

Also in 2002, Colonial Williamsburg captured 23 other significant national and regional awards related to communications and media outreach initiatives. Colonial Williamsburg News, the foundation’s weekly in-house newsletter, won an Award of Merit from the International Association of Business Communicators’ Washington, D.C., chapter as one of the region’s best internal communications vehicles.
