Williamsburg® and Achla Designs™ Announce New Licensing Partnership, Plan for Garden Collection

The WILLIAMSBURG Products Program and ACHLA Designs have signed a licensing partnership and announced plans to develop an 18th-century inspired garden collection for distribution to garden centers, home centers, hardware stores, catalogs and specialty retailers. In addition to the garden product, ACHLA Designs also will create a wrought iron fireplace collection, which is the company’s specialty. The garden component of the collection is scheduled to launch at the January 2004 Atlanta and New York Gift Shows.

ACHLA Designs produces a broad range of garden products and fireplace accessories. The company began operations in 1994 under Achla Bahl Madan, an architect, and her husband Ashok Hingorany, an engineer and owner of Minuteman International, which manufactures woodstove and fireplace accessories.

“We are dedicated to using traditional means to create high quality products for a contemporary lifestyle,” said Achla Bahl Madan. “For this new garden collection, we will focus on hand-forged, wrought iron products for outdoor use in addition to a mix of other garden items in galvanized iron, glass and wood. We always try to look at each item we design from a new angle, be it from the perspective of design or usage.”

“We are excited at the prospect of a new line of garden products for Colonial Williamsburg,” said Kris Fischer, director of licensing for Colonial Williamsburg. “Wrought iron is known for its durability and highly prized for its ability to portray both strength and grace of form. We think the ACHLA/WILLIAMSBURG collection will be a wonderful, popular addition to our products program.”

The WILLIAMSBURG Products Program, established in 1936, provides authentic reproductions of antique furnishings and accessories as well as an interpretive lifestyle collection, both of which reflect the rich decorative arts traditions of the 18th century. Revenue from the sale of WILLIAMSBURG products supports the educational programs of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, a not-for-profit, tax-exempt educational organization that oversees and operates the restored 18th-century town of Williamsburg, the country’s largest living history museum.
