Colin and Nancy Campbell Named Honorary Chairs of First Night Williamsburg

Colin and Nancy Campbell have been named honorary chairs of First Night Williamsburg 2004. Mr. Campbell is chairman, president and chief executive officer of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Mrs. Campbell is chairman emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation and a trustee of the Williamsburg Community Health Foundation.

“Each year, the board selects leaders from the community as honorary chairs. In the few years that the Campbells have been here, they’ve been staunch supporters not only of Colonial Williamsburg, but also of the Williamsburg community. That is why they were prime candidates for honorary chairs this year,” said First Night Williamsburg committee chairperson Linda Baker. “As honorary chairs of First Night Williamsburg, the Campbells will offer guidance and help coordinate the partnership between First Night Williamsburg and Colonial Williamsburg, among other things.”

First Night Williamsburg seeks to foster the public’s appreciation of the visual and performing arts through an innovative, diverse and high quality program that provides a shared cultural experience that is accessible and affordable for all. The non-alcoholic event is held annually on New Year’s Eve. First Night International promotes, licenses and supports the development of First Night Festivals around the world.

“Nancy and I are delighted to serve as honorary chairs of First Night Williamsburg 2004,” Campbell said. “First Night is a leading example of the cultural, educational and entertainment offerings available in the Williamsburg area. We look forward to helping with the planning of this special way to welcome the New Year with family and friends.”

Colin Campbell joined the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s Board of Trustees in 1989 and became its chairman in 1998. He assumed the additional responsibilities of president and chief executive officer in 2000. Previously he served as president of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund from 1988-2000, following 18 years as president of Wesleyan University in Connecticut. He is a trustee of the New-York Historical Society and immediate past chairman of PBS.

Nancy Campbell is chairman emeritus of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She was elected to the Board of Trustees in 1989, and served as vice chairman from 1993-96 and chairman from 1996-99. She most recently chaired the Trust’s successful Campaign for America’s Historic Places. Mrs. Campbell has been appointed by the U.S. Secretary of the Interior to serve on the Jamestown Commemoration Commission to help plan 2007 activities.
