Nationally acclaimed experts featured as CW hosts 58th Antiques Forum "In Search of the Past: Restoring and Furnishing America's Historic Sites"

Nationally recognized and award-winning museum experts are featured presenters at the 58th annual Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum, “In Search of the Past: Restoring and Furnishing America’s Historic Sites,” Feb. 5-9 and Feb. 26-March 2 in Colonial Williamsburg’s renowned DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum adjacent to the Historic Area.

Scheduled speakers include:

  • Nancy Campbell, chair emeritus, National Trust for Historic Preservation will present America’s Historic Sites: “Custodians as Best We Can in Our Time.” Mrs. Campbell has served in numerous positions with a range of preservation organizations including chair of the Preservation League of New York State, commissioner of the Connecticut Historical Commission and chair of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.
  • Peter Kenny, Curator of American Decorative Arts and Administrator of the American Wing, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, N.Y., will present “Mansion House, Tenant House: A Tale of Two 18th-century Interiors from Van Rensselaer Manor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.” Mr. Kenny received the 1999 Robert Smith Award from the Decorative Arts Society.
  • Page Talbott, associate director and chief curator of the Benjamin Franklin Tercentenary, Philadelphia, will present “Benjamin Franklin at Home.” Dr. Talbott was co-editor and contributor to Philadelphia’s Cultural Landscape: The Sartain Family Legacy, winner of the Ewall Newman Award from the American Historical Print Collectors Association and the Philadelphia Book Guild Award.
  • Lynne Dakin Hastings, curator and chief, Hampton National Historic Site, Baltimore, will present “Richly adorned…and Then Some: Interpreting Three Centuries of Tales at Hampton.” Ms. Hastings is a two-time Albright Fellow and Attingham Fellow. She teaches seminars for the Winterthur Graduate Program in Early American Culture, George Washington University and other museum studies graduate programs.

    Colonial Williamsburg experts, collectors and scholars will present a series of illustrated lectures and video-assisted workshops on 18th-century furniture, maps, ceramics, textiles, paintings, metals and a number of important historic buildings.

    In addition to the formal program, forum guests may register for optional hands-on workshops as well as tours of private historic homes in the region. Optional hands-on workshops with Colonial Williamsburg experts will include: Case Studies: Curtains and Covers for the Historic House; American Neoclassical Furniture; Archaeological Evidence of Domestic Assemblages; A Closer Look at English Earthenware; and From Hearth to Table Preparing and Serving an 18th-Century Meal.

    Optional bus day trips will include the following sites: Fredericksburg, one of 18th-century Virginia’s major urban and artistic centers; the 1791 Cape Henry Lighthouse, the first Federal lighthouse in the United States; and Virginia’s Thoroughgood and Lynnhaven Houses, both circa 1725.

    Conference registration fee includes the opening reception, all presentations, continental breakfasts, coffee breaks and afternoon refreshments, a closing reception and dinner, and a Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket valid for the duration of the conference.
