Classic women’s clothing store signs lease with CW, opening 2003
It’s finally official! Talbots, the well-known women’s clothing retailer, has reached an agreement with Colonial Williamsburg to lease store space in the new commercial building to be constructed at College Corner in Merchants Square. The new Talbots store, to be located at the corner of Duke of Gloucester and North Boundary Streets, will be two stories high and will house a total of 8,500 square feet.
Talbots, based in the Boston suburb of Hingham, Mass., is a leading national specialty retailer, cataloger and e-tailer of classic, high quality women’s apparel, shoes and accessories. It operates more than 800 stores throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom and has a circulation of approximately 57 million catalogs worldwide.
“We are very excited about the prospect of bringing in such a unique retailer for our local customers and visitors,” said Edward S. “Ned” Dunn, president and CEO of the Colonial Williamsburg Company. “Talbots will be a wonderful addition to the Merchants Square family.”
Employees may have noticed a number of other recent changes in Merchants Square including the opening of both the new Precious Gem store and Bella Lingerie on Duke of Gloucester Street. The Cheese Shop, which remains open at its Prince George location, has begun construction in the former A Good Place to Eat and will open an expanded version of the Cheese Shop with a bistro and wine cellar in September. Berret’s Restaurant opened a new addition, called the Tap House, April 1.
Theses changes are part of the comprehensive plan to reinvigorate Merchants Square. Store space that is available and under discussion for new tenants includes the former sites of the Williamsburg Drug Store, Bacova Guild in the Henry Street Shops, and the combined former sites of the Cheese Shop and Precious Gem.
