WILLIAMSBURG® Products Program, Mars Incorporated develop new line of chocolate products that gets its inspiration from revolutionary times
The WILLIAMSBURG® Products Program and Mars Incorporated recently launched the first historically inspired line of real chocolate products. Called American Heritage Chocolate, the line features Chocolate Sticks, sold individually and in packages of four, a Chocolate Bar and a Chocolate Drink Mix. These products were developed for the WILLIAMSBURG Products Program by Mars Incorporated.
“Colonial Williamsburg’s Historic Foodways program served as a catalyst for this project,” said Frank Clark, supervisor of the program. “The Historic Foodways staff worked closely with the Historic Division of Mars to advance this new product.”
The American Heritage line stays true to 18th-century chocolate recipes because it is flavored with spices, including nutmeg, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Colonial Williamsburg, Fort Ticonderoga and the University of California-Davis researched the recipes and packaging to ensure their authenticity.
Subsequently, Mars invited Historic Foodways staff to their chocolate research and development facility in Elizabethtown, Pa. Clark and Foodways journeyman Jim Gay demonstrated how they make chocolate in Colonial Williamsburg’s colonial kitchens by roasting cocoa beans, shelling them, crushing them in a large mixing bowl and transferring them to a heated grinding stone. Using an iron rolling pin, the cocoa beans are ground into a liquid and sugar and spices are added.
The American Heritage Chocolate Stick costs $1.50 each or a package of four sticks can be purchased for $5 packaged in a reusable drawstring bag. The American Heritage Chocolate Bar is a 5.13 ounce of solid block of chocolate for $10; recipes can be found on the website, www.americanheritagechocolate.com. The American Heritage Chocolate Drink Tin features eight drink mix packets that can be dissolved in hot water or milk and costs $30.
The American Heritage products are available through five museum sites and Colonial Williamsburg will be the largest retailer. At Colonial Williamsburg, these chocolate products can be purchased through the Craft House in Merchants Square, Tarpley’s, Greenhow, Raleigh Tavern Bakery and DuBois Grocer, and WILLIAMSBURG Revolutions at Colonial Williamsburg’s Visitor Center.
