CW Journal offers a glimpse of holidays past and present in special edition

The 2005 Holiday Edition of Colonial Williamsburg, the popular-history Journal of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, now is on selected newsstands. This special issue is dedicated to holidays past and present in the 18th-century capital of Virginia.

Highlights include:

  • “Christmas is a coming . . .” an essay on Christmas customs and roots by historian and retired Colonial Williamsburg archaeologist Ivor Noel Hume;
  • “Betokening Christmas,” an illustrated essay on Santas and toys from Colonial Williamsburg’s Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum by Colonial Williamsburg photographer Tom Green;
  • “Colonial Church Christmas,” an article on religious observances of the holiday in the 1700s by Colonial Williamsburg instructor Robert Doares; and
  • “Christmas Trees, the Confederacy, and Colonial Williamsburg,” by retired Colonial Williamsburg historian and journal associate editor Harold Gill about the Rev. Mr. Charles Minnegerode, the refugee College of William and Mary professor who raised Williamsburg’s first recorded Christmas tree; became pastor to Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America; administered wedding vows to the parents of W. A. R. Goodwin—who sold John D. Rockefeller Jr. on the idea of Williamsburg’s restoration—and taught at the Virginia Theological Seminary while Goodwin was a student.
