CW names four new trustees

The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation Board of Trustees has elected four new members. They are Thomas F. Farrell II, Judith A. McHale, Barbara B. Oberg, and Henry C. Wolf.

“These are truly outstanding and accomplished individuals,” said Colin Campbell, chairman and president of Colonial Williamsburg. “Their professional achievements in business, finance, communications and education and their collective passion for history and the mission of Colonial Williamsburg will serve the Foundation in multiple and creative ways. We are grateful for their commitment.”

Thomas F. Farrell II of Richmond, VA, is president, CEO, and director of Dominion Resources, Inc. He also serves as a director of Virginia Electric and Power Company, and chairman, president and CEO of Consolidated Natural Gas Company, both wholly-owned subsidiaries of Dominion Resources, Inc. Dominion is one of the nation's largest producers of energy serving 5.3 million retail energy customers in nine states. Prior to joining Dominion in 1995, Farrell served as a partner with the law firm McGuire, Woods, Battle & Boothe.

Farrell is rector of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia and a member of the Founders Society at the University of Virginia Center for Politics. He is a director of the Nuclear Energy Institute and serves on the boards of Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Engineering and the Virginia Foundation of Independent Colleges. He holds undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia. He is married to Anne Garland T. Farrell, and they are parents of two sons.

Judith A. McHale is immediate past president and CEO of Discovery Communications, Inc., a leading global media company with operations in 170 countries and territories reaching 1.4 billion cumulative subscribers. Discovery’s more than 100 television networks include the Discovery Channel, TLC and Animal Planet.

McHale joined Discovery in 1987 as general counsel and served as president and chief operating officer before becoming CEO in 2004. Before joining Discovery, McHale served as general counsel for MTV Networks. She began her career as an attorney at the New York law firm of Battle Fowler LLP.

McHale left her post at Discovery in December 2006 to participate more directly in educational and governmental initiatives related to critical domestic and global issues. She continues as an advisor on Discovery’s education business initiatives and will serve in a voluntary capacity as the chairman of the Discovery Channel Global Education Partnership.

McHale serves as director of a variety of organizations including Vital Voices Global Partnership, Inc., Host Hotels & Resorts, Polo Ralph Lauren Corp., and vice chair of the Africa Society.

McHale is a graduate of the University of Nottingham, England and holds a law degree from Fordham University. She and her husband Michael O’Halloran live in Bethesda, Maryland.

Barbara Bowen Oberg is professor and lecturer in the Department of History at Princeton University where she serves as general editor of the Papers of Thomas Jefferson. From 1986 to 1998 she was a senior research scholar and history lecturer at Yale University and also served as editor of the Papers of Benjamin Franklin. Previous responsibilities included editing the Papers of Albert Gallatin at Baruch College of the City University of New York and the Papers of Philip Mazzei at Fairleigh Dickinson University. She co-authored Federalists Reconsidered and Benjamin Franklin, Jonathan Edwards, and the Representation of American Culture.

Oberg is a past president of the Society of Historians of the Early American Republic and a reviewer and panelist for the National Endowment for the Humanities. She serves on the advisory board of the Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies and the council of the Omohundro Institute of Early American History and Culture, and is a member of a number of history-based organizations including the American Historical Association, American Philosophical Society, and the Organization of American Historians.

Oberg is a graduate of Wellesley College with masters and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Santa Barbara. She and her husband John Perry Leavell, Jr. live in Princeton, New Jersey.

Henry C. Wolf is vice chairman and chief financial officer of Norfolk Southern Corporation. Norfolk Southern is a holding company that includes a major freight railroad, a natural resources company and telecommunications company. Wolf began his career with Norfolk Southern in 1973 serving in various positions before becoming chief financial officer in 1993. Prior to joining Norfolk Southern, he served in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General Corps and clerked on the United States Tax Court.

Wolf is a member of the Board of Visitors of the College of William and Mary and serves as vice rector of the College. He is an emeritus member of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science Council and a former member of the Board of Visitors of the Eastern Virginia Medical School. Wolf also serves on the board of directors of AGL Resources, Hertz Global Holdings Corporation and Shenandoah Life Insurance Company.

Wolf holds undergraduate and law degrees from the College of William and Mary, an MBA from Louisiana State University, an LLM from Georgetown University, and is a graduate of the Harvard Advanced Management Program. He and his wife, Dixie, live in Norfolk, Virginia.
