Expanding
The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg

A night view of the Museum Expansion.

New gallery space and improved access to the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum define the expansion project.

With the addition of 8,000 square feet of gallery space, The Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg will be able to showcase much more of their definitive collections of British and American furniture, paintings, silver, numismatics, ceramics, tools, textiles, maps, weapons, American folk art and other media.

A new, central, street-level entrance will make it much easier for guests to identify and enter the museums. The reconstructed 18th-century Public Hospital — through which visitors to the art museums currently pass to reach the galleries — will remain an exhibition building for educational and interpretive purposes.

Other key plans for the museums include:

  • a spacious lobby and grand concourse with portals into both the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum
  • a new mechanical plant enabling important upgrades and replacements of vital mechanical and environmental control systems
  • more space for enhanced programming and activities for visitors of all ages
  • an expanded and updated café and museum store

Gifts for constructing and furnishing the new museum spaces will be gratefully acknowledged in a special donor recognition area.
