1)
Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492.
He thought every day
Japan was closer and closer, but hey
It's ten thousand miles away.
As you will remember
Cartier discovered the St. Lawrence River
While Hornando Cortes makes you shiver.
Pizarro was born and his mother was so poor
She left him at the church door.
Pizarro was such a sorrow,
Just like Cortes his heart was hollow.
Henry Hudson was an English man
He made four trips to the new land.
Coronado very bold and brave
He didn't find gold not even in a cave.
Vasco da Gama that was his name
He found a water route,
but didn't claim it for Spain.
Magellan tried to sail
Around the world you know.
He didn't make it
But his crew did though.
De Soto was looking for gold
Although he didn't find any
He was still bold.
Much wealth would later pour into England
Because of his discovery
The end of Cabot's second voyage
Is shrouded in mystery.

3)
The Ballad of Jamestown
by Louis Warner

By order of James I
Three ships sailed across the sea.
The journey to North America
By the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery.

The English built their colony
Along the river, swamp, and marsh.
They built the fort and stayed awhile
And found the climate was harsh.

Mosquitos and diseases came
With the summer and its heat.
John Smith said to everyone,
"If you don't work don't eat."

After a few months
The cold winter hit.
Everything was dying now
The colonists thought that was it.

They tried to sail back
When they saw some boats
That carried goods for the colony
Like tools, food, and warm coats.

With some tobacco plants
This English colony
Produced and provided a way
To make a lot more money.

Because of their hard work
It finally came to pass
That the settlers of Jamestown
Had a colony to last.

2)
In 1540 Coronado was hired
To find gold for Spain, but he was a liar.
De Soto of Spain he searched for gold,
But he searched in vain though he was bold.
Who conquered the Azecs? Cortes of Spain.
He did away with the king and
Began his reign.
Columbus, Columbus he's our man.
If he can't prove the world is round
No one can.
Champlain was a geographer.
He was given good pay,
He made colonies for France
And died on Christmas Day.
Pizarro was famous
Finding gold for Spain.
Pizarro was cruel
But he had a smart brain.
Five ships set sail around the earth
With Magellan and his crew.
But only one survived the trip
The rest went down in the blue.
Balboa landed in Panama
As he sailed the Atlantic for Spain.
He found an Ocean
And called it the South Sea
For that name was on his brain.
Cartier for France
Searched for gold
But instead of finding it
He grew old.
Cabot sailed for England
But his mind was tied
Thinking he had found Asia
Poor Cabot died.
The Cape of Good Hope
Da Gama did sail
For Portugal's king, King Manuel.
Hudson is cool
Hudson is neat.
He sailed for Holland
And got stuck in the sleet.
