"In Their Own Words" - Literacy Resources

This year Colonial Williamsburg has added a literacy component for each Electronic Field Trip. These materials are drawn primarily from primary sources—people of the past speaking “in their own words.”

Words to the Songs "War and Washington" and "The Surrender of Cornwallis"

George Washington's Letter to James McHenry

Parson Weems - The Life of Washington

Teachers, there is also a Portable Document Format (.PDF) version of these materials available which includes some brief suggestions on how to use these primary sources in your classroom. Print out the .PDF version to create student hand-outs, overhead transparencies, or classroom notebooks. You need Adobe Acrobat Reader in order to view the file. You may download the free Adobe Acrobat Reader plug-in to view document online and print a copy. You will also have the option to save the Portable Document File to your local disk for viewing and printing.
