Last Sunday, the first Virginia regiment, under the command of Colonel George Gibson, set out on their march to join his Excellency General Washington's army.

The men joined Washington's troops in time to fight at the Battle of Brandywine, September 11, 1777. Colonel Gibson's main claim to fame, however, happened the year before. In 1776, George Gibson had been sent by Governor Patrick Henry to buy gunpowder from the Spanish. Gibson and 25 men dressed as tradesmen and bought 10,000 lbs. of gunpower which they transported up river and back to Virginia.
