About this entry:
Gardens of the wealthy were maintained by indentured white servants, free blacks and slaves. In some cases a gardener was prized as was James, the slave of Nathaniel Burwell, who could prune fruit trees, transplant native seedlings, and force plants in hot beds and bell glasses.
