Chowning's
Tavern offers a new midday fare menu and waiter service for inside tavern
dining from 11:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. Enjoy traditional favorites such
as Brunswick stew and Carolina-style barbecue along with hot and cold
sandwiches, salads, sides, a children’s menu, and desserts. Chowning's
continues to provide walk-up service in the outdoor Garden Bar. Order
at the counter and enjoy sandwiches and savory sides in a casual setting
under the grape arbor, with sandwiches starting at $7.
In the evening, Chowning's becomes a true 18th-century rum and ale
house adapted for family enjoyment, serving light fare, local ales and
wines, rums, and Colonial Williamsburg's own draft root beer. Gambol's – a lively nighttime program that has been presented
for 25 years at Chowning's – has been expanded to operate throughout
the evening. Balladeers rouse guests in period sing-alongs, and costumed
servers play popular games of the day. Family entertainment is the rule
between 5 and 8 p.m. From 8 p.m. until closing, Chowning’s caters
to a more mature audience.
Colonial Williamsburg Taverns are operated seasonally. Please call 800-HISTORY for more information and operating hours.
