Today, 9/2/2010 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM Bassett Hall

Guests can tour the Williamsburg home of John D. Rockefeller Jr. and his wife Abby Aldrich Rockefeller and admire the variety of folk art Abby chose for this special home.

Then all family members can create their own piece of folk art—a theorem—to take home. These theorems take the form of stenciled still life pictures done with colored pencils on paper. Historically, theorems were often still-life pictures painted on velvet.

Guests may enter and exit any time during the program.

Princes without a Palace: Tracing African Princes and Captives in Williamsburg
African American
Museum Program
Special Program
Today, 9/2/2010 3:00 PM - 4:00 PM Hennage Auditorium

Princes without a Palace will provide an overview of the international Atlantic World of Africa, Europe, and North America during the slave trade. A historian will narrate slides and video excerpts from Colonial Williamsburg’s Electronic Field Trip "The Slave Trade" to assist the audience in discovering the historic buildings, people, and events in Williamsburg connected to the Atlantic slave trade experience.

Thousands of African captives, including princes, were forcefully migrated to colonial Virginia. Did the princes’ knowledge of African and European culture help them survive and escape their exile and bondage? What role did language, literacy, and international networking play in their survival?

The program provides insight into the international slave-trading relationship between Africans in Calabar, West Africa, and European ship captains in England. Explore how free and enslaved African seamen, like Olaudah Equiano, participated in the international network of slavery, slave trade, and abolition. Black seamen were part of an international communication network. In the 18th-century global village, the actions of African slaves in one country could threaten the international enterprise of slavery and the slave trade.

This program is part of Colonial Williamsburg’s Forum on Early African American History and Culture, which seeks to broaden the public knowledge about African and African American history and culture in Virginia and the Atlantic World during the American Revolutionary era.
