The previous governor to be inaugurated in Williamsburg was Thomas Jefferson in 1779. Patrick Henry was sworn as the state’s first governor in 1776 and served three one-year terms.

The Virginia legislature voted to conduct this year’s inauguration in Williamsburg — the colonial capital from 1699 to 1780 — because of renovations under way at the Capitol in Richmond. The 140 members of the General Assembly will attend the inauguration ceremonies.
